Scuba Diving in Cozumel with ScubaTony

Cozumel is one of the best places to scuba dive in the world! The island is located off the eastern coast of Mexico and surrounded by the second largest barrier reef system in the world, the Mesoamerican reef system. Scuba diving in Cozumel can satisfy divers of any experience level with dives raging from shallow reefs, caverns, deep dramatic walls and drift dives that will make you feel like you are an astronaut in outer space.

When we were planning our dive trip to Cozumel we spent a lot of time finding the best diving operator on the island. Some of the things that we always look for are best ratings on TripAdvisor, small dive groups, personalized service and excellent safety record. ScubaTony is the best diving operator in Cozumel that satisfied all of our requirements.

When we arrived on the island we were both hesitant to get back into diving since Joey just had a bad experience with equipment malfunctioning in Costa Rica. His air gauge got stuck and stopped working at 95 feet which eventually made him run out of air without the gauge showing he was empty. He had to make an emergency ascent with his dive guide.

I emailed ScubaTony the night before we were scheduled to dive explaining this experience and also letting them know that I am not as confident in the water. I received a very quick response giving us various options of how to regain our confidence in the water.

Joey feeling like a fish again under water after a few dives!

The first two days were spent easing into diving by having a private dive master Marc who made us feel very comfortable and safe in the water again. We explored so many wonderful dive sites during our 5 day dive trip with ScubaTony: Yucab, La Francesa, Casa Blanca, Tormentos, Chankanaab, Santa Rosa wall and Dalila. Each of these dives sites were unique and provided excellent opportunity to get used to drift diving and marvel at the majestic coral formations all around us.

Drift diving is such a unique experience where you feel like you are flying over reef! You just let the current take your body for a ride without having to kick your fins. There is something meditative about the whole experience because as soon as you let go of trying to control which direction you go and simply let the current do the work, you relax and enjoy the marine life pass you by.

Some of our favorite moments on the dives were going through the swim throughs which are large cavern like tunnels with different species of coral hanging all around you. One of my favorite swim throughs was in Santa Rosa wall where we went through a long dark tunnel down which opened up to this deep blue water with the wall drop to the abyss below you. This was one of the moments that took our breath away!

Each of our dives sites had vast diversity of marine life including giant puffer fish, several varieties of angel fish, parrot fish, toad fish (endemic to Cozumel), nurse sharks, sting rays, eagle rays that glided gracefully in the current next to us, turtles, moray eel, barracudas, grouper, flounders just to name a few. We ended each of our dives with giant smiles on our face and can't wait to return back to Cozumel to experience the rest of the underwater magic that this island has to offer.

We have seen a nurse shark on almost every dive!
